CPCS students began the new year with a donation of more than 2,000 new books, part of a 20,000 nationwide book donation made possible by a partnership between First Book and Barclays, the major global financial services provider. In celebration of the donation, 25 Barclays employees visited CPCS second graders to read their brand new books with them.
The CPCS second-graders each received two books of their own including a special first-edition copy of The Berenstain Bears’ Dollars and Sense children’s book written to address financial literacy and learning for children, co-branded by the First Book Marketplace and Barclays. The school will receive the additional books for its library and classrooms.
“We are truly grateful to Barclays and First Book for their generous donation to our students,” commented CPCS Director Melanie Bryon. “Through reading, students can use their imaginations to explore the world beyond their classrooms and neighborhoods and we are thankful to Barclays for helping us to create that outlet for our students.”
This donation is one of the many ways that Barclays has supported CPCS and its organizational partner, Beginning with Children Foundation (BwCF). Over the past three years, Barclays has provided mentors for BwCF alumni students and helped fund BwCF’s professional training and internship program, which has prepared and placed over 60 alumni students to work in nonprofits and corporations across New York City. Barclays employees also were awarded the 2009 Barclays Chairman’s Award for team achievement in the Americas for their volunteer work at CPCS’s Saturday Math Academies.
